Dr Seuss wrote is books to teach children how to read. He loves Dr Seuss I Will Teach You In A Room I Will Teach You Now On Zoom Shirt, Hoodie, Sweatshirt. Whether it was through poetry or not, he was using the form of writing he saw as most effective in teaching children how to read. Although I personally see his writing as poetic, and believe that he was a poet, I don’t think that is what he thought of himself as in comparison to the rest of the writers producing children’s books at the time.
Technically, poetry is any type of writing that does not extend all the way to the right hand side of the page. Of course, there is prose poetry. But since he used rhyme and meter he also can be considered a poet, but not one of serious consequence, not even as a writer of light verse. The wit that is active in his books is of a much lower grade than real light verse. If you want to read quality light verse I recommend either Ogden Nash or X. J. Kennedy.
In the strictest sense, yes, since he wrote in verse. However from what I know of him and his children’s books his main goal was never to write the stories he wrote as poems, but to enable young children to better learn how to read the English language better. This in and of itself can be quite a challenge when you’re dealing with printed media, since English has written words like read and lead which simultaneously do and do not rhyme.
